How the Bluelab Soil pH Pen Works:
PH levels have a significant effect on the absorption rates of certain nutrients and on micro-organisms present in the substrate. For this reason, knowing about the pH levels of your growing medium and adjusting nutrient pH levels accordingly is an essential part of indoor growing.
The Bluelab Soil pH Pen represents the quickest and easiest way to gain highly accurate information about the acidity or alkalinity of your substrate. The unit itself has an LCD display, three buttons and a 10cm long probe. Around the probe sits a protective cover that also acts as a ‘dibber’ – when you want to use the Bluelab Soil pH Pen, drive the unit with the dibber still attached into the substrate to make a perfectly sized hole. The probe can then be lifted out and unsheathed, then placed back into the substrate, saving on wear and tear and extending its lifespan. Though this pH meter is marketed for soil, it will in fact work with almost any medium, and is every bit as useful for those who prefer to work with other media, such as coco coir. With the probe in place, simply press the ‘power’ button to activate the unit and wait for the readings to stabilize. The Bluelab Soil pH Pen will then provide you with the information required to tailor nutrients to absolute perfection.
Measurement resolution (pH): 0.1pH
Measurement resolution (temp): 1°C, 1°F
Accuracy at 25 °C (77 °F): ±0.1 pH
Calibration: Two point (pH 7.0 and pH 4.0 or pH 10.0)
Power source: 1 x AAA alkaline battery
Using the Bluelab Soil pH Pen:
Soak your Soil pH Pen probe in KCL (potassium chloride) for 24 hours before using it.
With the dibber still attached, gently but firmly drive the unit into the substrate you wish to test. Pull the unit back out and you will be left with a perfectly sized hole, ready to take your reading. Unscrew the dibber and place it to one side. Insert the probe into the newly formed hole and press the ‘power’ button. Wait for the readings to stabilize before noting down the pH level. Adjust nutrients and additives accordingly. Ideal pHs are roughly 5.8 in hydroponic media and coco and 6.5 for soil, depending on plant species.
